Leeds city council leader Jon Trickett has accused the Bradford and Bingley building society of insulting part of the city by refusing to grant a mortgage to someone who lives there, reports the Guardian (p5)

The society described Chapeltown in Leeds as an area 'closely associated with prostitution and drug abuse', but has now backed down on its refusal to sell a mortgage on a property in the district after a local outcry.

Mr Trickett said the company had 'cast an unfair slur on the local community.'
