CIPFA should consider merging with other accountancy bodies, according to Camden LBC chief executive and leading institute member Steve Bundred.

Writing in this week's LGC, Mr Bundred says 'perhaps the time has come to think again about the vision of one body representing all accountants in the UK'.

He insists members do not have to disbelieve institute chief executive David Adams' 'emphatic denial' of merger talks to know that CIPFA is 'in trouble'.

Mr Bundred says: 'The difficulties are not of Mr Adams' making, and his action to address them has been prompt and impressive. But it highlights the underlying problem - that CIPFA has for many years been behaving like a large organisation, while stubbornly remaining a small one.'

He concludes: 'Mr Adams is right to fight for CIPFA's interests, but a merger need not be a takeover.'
