Contractors are put off from tendering for local government catering contracts because the process is too bureaucratic and time consuming, according to the British Hospitality Association.

The association recently met the DoE to discuss why 60% of tenders for school and welfare catering are awarded in house without any competition from the private sector.

It called on the government to insist all councils use a standard pre tender document.
