There are 59 burial sites around the UK which contain over 6,000 BSE-infected cows, which may cause a health risk, reports The Independent, (p1).

The list of the sites is published in the paper after it managed to obtain a leaked copy. The disclosure follows repeated attempts by shadow agriculture minister Gavin Strang to get the locations from the government - the paper claims the government suppressed it.

If the infected cattle come into contact with the water supply there could be a health risk, reports the paper.

Agriculture minister Douglas Hogg yesterday issued a statement denying there was any health risk (see LGCNet 29.4.97).
