A councillor from Bury St Edmonds MBC is hoping to meet prime minister Tony Blair this week to urge him to implement Labour's pledge to give councils the power to set business rates. The East Anglian Daily Times (30 Sept, p2) reported that Mark Ereira is acting on behalf of Bury town centre management committee, whose secretary Nick Martin has written to Blair asking him to meet Ereira during the Labour party conference.

In his letter, he said: 'There is continuing concern about the future of our town centres with competition from out-of-town stores, increasing shopper mobility and changing shopper trends, including the growth of 'armchair' shopping. It is reassuring that the government has confirmed its commitment to town centres, laying to rest doubts over the role of town centres as focal points for commercial and civic activity.'
