Over 100 MPs of all parties have backed a call for councils to gain the same powers over bus services enjoyed by London mayor Ken Livingstone (Lab).

London's buses are regulated by Transport for London, but councils elsewhere have no formal powers except over subsidised routes.

Merseyside Passenger Transport Authority chair Mark Dowd (Lab) said regulation was essential to combat social exclusion.

'Estate after estate has lost lifeline bus services, leaving some of the most deprived communities further isolated from opportunity,' he warned.
