A business leader is joining the race to become chairman of the Northern Development Agency, reports Northeast Online.

Bill Midgley, chair of the Northern Business Forum is one of six candidates in the running for the post at the agency, which will come into force in April next year.

Mr Midgley said he had a broad base of understanding of the needs of the region and its people, having long been involved in business, community and charity organisations.

Other candidates are Hugh Morgan Williams (North CBI leader), Llew Avis (president of the North-East chamber of commerce; John Bridge, (north development company chief executive); Durham CC leader Don Robson and Tyne Theatre and Opera house boss Karl Watkin.
