Expected Tory gains in next month's local elections could be overshadowed by parliamentary defeat, according to LGC electoral expert Professor Colin Rallings.

The results of a Test Valley BC by-election held last week suggest the Tories could lose their Romsey seat, held by Michael Colvin until his recent death.

The Tories retained the Harewood ward, but the election saw the Liberal Democrats double their vote share, compared with last May.

If the Harewood result is repeated in the parliamentary by-election, the Tories face losing the seat. Prof Rallings said: 'A defeat would overshadow the sizeable gains the party stands to make in the same day's local elections.'
