Byelaws made by East Ayrshire Council which ban the consumption of alcohol in designated public places were confirmed today by The Scottish Office.

All such byelaws must be confirmed by the Secretary of State.

They will come into force on May 26, 1997.

-- The new byelaws will prohibit drinking in the following places:

The whole of:

Kilmarnock, Newmilns, Burnton, Cumnock, Catrine, Lugton, Stewarton, Lugar and Logan, Burnside, Hurlford, Ochiltree, Hollybush, Auchinleck, Dalrymple, Waterside (formerly in Kilmarnock and Loudon District), Galston, Bellsbank, Coalhall, Mauchline, Dunlop, Waterside (formerly in Cumnock & Doon Valley District), Kilmaurs, Fenwick, Leggate and Bankglen, Darvel, Sorn, Skares, New Cumnock, Knockentiber, Sinclairston, Crosshouse, Rankiston, Polnessan, Drongan, Craigens, Hayhill, Dalmellington, Gatehead, Cronberry, Patna, Moscow, Kingstead, Muirkirk, Priestland, Dalleagles.
