The local government ombudsman has been asked to investigate Newport CBC chief executive Sandy Blair's actions in the run up to last September's referendum on a national assembly for Wales, reports the Western Mail (p8).

The complaint centres on that month's issue of the authority's newsletter which set out a case to persuade Newport's voters to back an Assembly. In fact 62 per cent of the Newport referendum vote went against devolution.

Critic say council money should not have been used to try to influence opinion on a political matter.

Mr Blair told the paper: 'I satisfied myself at the time that the eaction taken was appropriate, and I remain so satisfied.'
