The Countryside Commission is asking local authorities to consider sharing their planning powers to allow greater protection for areas of outstanding natural beauty, reports The Daily Telegraph (p10).

The commission is asking councils if they would be prepared to operate in the same way as a pilot scheme in Sussex where the conservation board set up to run the Sussex Downs area of outstanding natural beauty has been operating with statutory rights to take part in local planning committee meetings.
