Larger homes need to be built in social housing to meet the needs of families, the chair of the National Housing Federation has said.
John Cross made the plea on the first day of his organisation's annual conference in Birmingham.
He said it wasn't social housing enough to produce more homes, they also needed to be of the right type.
"To meet the requirements of those in need of new social housing, we must build large family homes, imaginative retirement homes and homes for people with extra support needs."
He also called for housing associations to be given more freedom in the way they operate.
