Cambridgeshire CC has halted its pioneering road-charging scheme although the pilot was deemed a success, reports The Guardian (p5). The project launched in October aimed to beat traffic congestion in the city centre. The electronic system of 'pay as you drive' attracted attention as it was flexible to be used on motorways, says the paper.

The pilot was financed by the council and the EC with all party support. But yesterday a Cambridgeshire spokesman said the hung council would not back any more work on the scheme. Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors want priority given to improving public transport.
