The Daily Mail (August 30, p20) reported that 13 council staff who carried on working after winning£10m in the national lottery are to go on strike this week.

The women, who work in a homeless persons unit will walk out in protest at the the council's treatment of one of their colleagues who took time off to be with her family after a bereavement.

A Camden LBC spokesman told the paper that the woman had taken a total of 48.5 days leave and the council had asked her to treat nine of them as part of her annual holiday entitlement.

'We have to balance her needs with our duty to provide service to homeless people.

'She has been more off work than at work. But she has said she wants to take another holiday in October. We understand her problem, but we have to keep the unit open. Most of the staff there support our view.'
