Campaigners who oppose the government's national housebuilding programme are looking to unite across the country, reports The Daily Telegraph (p12).

A Friends of the Earth spokesman said: 'What we need to do is to bring people together, so instead of acting on their own patch, they are co-ordinated into an effective fighting force.'

The housebuilding programme will encroach on greenbelt land, and a number of local authorities have already nominated areas which could be used to build the 4.4m-plus homes the government says are needed.

The Times (p4) reports that areas in Chester, Bradford, Bromsgrove, and Barnsley have already been nominated by local authorities.
