The government has recognised the difficulties and issues that we face in Herefordshire and out of a total budget of£175.5m has told us we have over budgeted by£253,000.

Council leader Roger Phillips said: 'The bottom line is that Herefordshire is recognised as a sensible, middle of the road authority, with relatively low levels of spending per head of population while being ranked as a 'good' authority by the independent Audit Commission in its Comprehensive Performance Assessment.

'This has been reflected in today's announcementwhich seems to be an acknowledgement by central government that, while it didn't completely agree with us, took on board the broad thrust of our case when we met representatives from the ODPM.

'The budget reduction of£253,000 required - which must be seen in the context of our annual spend of£175.5m - amounts to some£3.80 a year for a Band D council tax payer and must be viewed against the cost of rebilling, which will cost in the order of£100,000, or£1.50 for a band D property.

'We have 21 days to make representation to the ODPM and we are keen to put forward our case,' added Mr Phillips.
