The Hampstead and Highgate Express (p2) reports that residents of new housing developments in Camden are set to be banned from owning cars.

Camden LBC's streets and transport committee were due to agree to the principle of establishing car free estates.

Committee chair John Thane told the paper: 'It is a very experimental, radical plan.

'We have one or two housing associations that have already expressed an interest in building car free developments.

'We want to reduce the impact of traffic in the borough by reducing the level of car ownership.

'Hardly anybody needs a car in the central areas because they have got so much public transport and can walk to so many places.'
