Cheap 'green' funerals are being offered by a Northumberland town council.

Hexham introduced the scheme, which uses biodegradable corrugated cardboard coffins, last month. Councillor Norman Read, chairman of Hexham burial ground, said that £180 buys a plot, a simple headstone and the coffin. The price excludes the cost of undertakers, but the council says families are free to bring the deceased along themselves.

The scheme attracted one burial and half a dozen orders in its first week, said Mr Read.

A number of firms now supply environmentally friendly caskets to local authorities. The Federation of British Cremation Authorities said cardboard coffins comply with the Code of Cremation Practice and the 'decision whether or not to accept an alternative coffin for cremation must rest with the cremation authority'.
