Cardiff aims to become the safest city in Europe in three years, reported the Western Mail (18 Jan, p7).

Welsh secretary Alun Michael launched the Cardiff Community Safety Partnership, set up under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998, yesterday.

It intends to continue the success of the Safer Cardiff Project, which saw the number of recorded crimes committed between 1992 and 1997 drop by 10,000. Research shows the public support community-based crime initiatives.
