The National Care Standards Commission has admitted to a backlog of unprocessed applications for care homes registration.

The commission, which has been operational for just one month, said the delays are a result of many of its regional offices not being ready to open on 1 April.

A helpline operated by four staff was inundated with up to 1,500 requests a day in early April and the commission was forced to employ a call centre.

The commission has received 11,000 applications for new registrations. Priority is being given to new providers and other registrations could take several weeks.

A NCSC spokeswoman said: 'It has been a huge undertaking and we are asking people to be patient with us and things will be sorted out as soon as possible.'
