Cosla's social services and health improvement spokesman Ronnie McColl described Friday's meeting with health minister Malcolm Chisholm, on care home fees, as positive and confirmed that good progress had been made.

Addressing Cosla's social services and health improvement executive group in Edinburgh, cllr McColl said: 'The discussions that the Cosla delegation held with Mr Chisholm were positive, and we seem to be making good progress. We are aware that the group set up to look at this suggested the introduction of a new fee framework from April 1st, 2002 and that is why we are having these discussions with the executive well in advance of that date.

'All in Cosla and Scottish local government remain as keen as ever to push on with these negotiations because the well-being and security of Scotland's elderly is our main concern in all of this.'
