A Birmingham City Council care worker who left her husband because of his alleged violence is threatened with deportation because she had been married for less than a year, reports The Guardian (p15).

Prakash Chavrimootoo, who has worked for the council for over six years, married a British citizen in Mauritius in 1989. Within a year of her arrival in this country, she had to leave her husband.

An application for judicial review of the case will be heard today.
