A private members bill being put forward to the House of Commons by Malcolm Wickes, the Labour MP for Croydon North West, is planning to give councils the right to support and assess carers in the locality, The Independent reports (p5).

Authorities would not be obliged by law to provide services for carers in their own right, they would merely be empowered.

Mr Wickes said: 'In theory the government should support giving carers extra help as it has put care at home at the centre of its community care policy'.

He pointed out that those who provide care at home have been taken for granted long enough. 'Unless we recognise their value and help them cope the carer may just collapse under the strain'.
