Charges for local authority care vary widely across the country, reports the Express money section (p25).

The paper says that Cheshire CC has one of the highest care charges, set at a maximum level of £100 a week for 20 hours of care at home. But in Surrey CC, 20 hours of care costs a maximum of £8.20 a week.

Bromley LBC is described as planning to increase its fixed charge from £6.85 a week to a maximum of £68.90 this October, while nearby Sutton LBC is reported to have a top charge of £108 a week for 20 hours care.

The paper reports that Maria Goldenberg, from Bromley, has set up a community care campaign group to protest unfair charges.
