Government plans to force local authorities to set targets for traffic levels could result in the banning of cars from town centres, according to the Sunday Times (19 January, p7).

Surrey CC has already introduced a target to increase the use of public transport by 25% in 10 years and to curb car use. Edinburgh Council has banned vehicles from the main Princes Street.
