The government's cutback on local government spending announced in today's budget will mean great problems for local government involving further cuts in services and jobs and with the effects spread right across the country, the ADC warned today
Cuts will bite in rural as well as urban areas and for many this will be the first time they have faced such a budget reduction.
This warning comes from the local authority associations representing the counties, districts and metropolitan boroughs.
Excluding increased provision for community care, the expenditure ceiling next year represents a cut of more than 1% on local authority spending this year of £42.6 bn.
Leaders of the three associations commented: 'Individual authorities will not know exactly how bad things will be until Thursday, when details of the revenue support grant and capping criteria are announced. But it is obvious that local government faces a bleak year, which could be bad news for those who depend on our services - especially the elderly, the infirm and children.'
