Norwich City Council is selling the Castle Mall shopping centre to ease a deepening cash crisis at the authority, reports the Eastern Daily Press.

The shopping centre freehold will be auctioned next month. It is expected to raise£5m.

Nick Williams, former chairman of the property committee, said: 'At the moment we've got very little option. It's a matter of selling some of the family silver to keep the roof on the house.'

In past years the council received a cut of the annual shopping centre profits.
