Representatives of the European Commission, the Committee of the Regions and the 'Atlantic Arc' have met in a bid to attract funding to areas bordering the Atlantic sea, reports The European (p5).

The Atlantic arc describes Europe's western flank, from the northern tip of Scotland to Gibraltar, and includes all the faded ports which once looked to trade with the New World for their prosperity. It takes in the east of Scotland, and England, Wales and Ireland.

The European reports that countries of the arc have already managed to unite to produce one project, the Ecu8 million (£6.4m) Atlantis programme, centring on environment and tourism and part funded by the regional development Fund.

It has until January to think up other schemes of mutual benefit.
