Responding to today's CBI report* calling for local communities to be given more say over their public services, Liberal Democrat shadow local government secretary, Andrew Stunell said:

'The Liberal Democrats welcome the CBI's agreement with a cause we have long championed - devolving power to local communities.

'We look forward to the CBI endorsing our policy of returning business rates to local authority control, so there are close links between jobs, employment and local services.

'The Liberal Democrats have long argued that giving greater control to local people delivers more relevant services at a higher standard.

'It's no coincidence therefore that Lib Dem run Islington and Woking are two of the six councils praised by the CBI.'
