The Confederation of British Industry yesterday called for an additional £2.5bn a year to be spent on transport to reduce congestion and create jobs, reports the Financial Times (p6).

Annual investment in transport needed to rise to £11.25bn a year over the next 10 years from the average of £8.87bn over the past decade.

Nearly half the proposed investment should be devoted to maintenance and renewal of existing roads, the CBI said in a report 'Winning Ways, Developing the UK Transport Network'.
