The cost of collecting refuse has been reduced by 20% as a result of CCT, according to an academic study, published by Imperial College, London.

A survey of 314 councils in England found that 80% experienced a cut in costs. Smaller reductions were achieved among the 70% that awarded contracts in-house.

A council could save £1.4 million over five years on the average contract if it was awarded to the private sector compared with £300,000 if it went to the in-house team, according to the research.
