Security guards are to mount a round the clock vigil at a Corby cemetery following a spate of vandalism, reports BBC Northampton.

The borough council is planning to spend£1,200 a year on security at the Shire Lodge Cemetery. This follows complaints about youngsters removing specially made wreaths and damaging graves.

Councillor Mark Pengelly says it is money the council can ill afford, but security guards are better than some other options.

He explained:'I believe we have the full support of the people in Corby on this. Those I have spoken to are quite happy with doing something. We could have taken some extreme measures and that is putting CCTV cameras within the graveyard perimeter.

'But speaking with other councillors and members of the public, we believed that would be imposing on people too much.

'We don't want people when they are tending their loved ones having to be looked at by people in CCTV rooms so we went against that decision'.
