Plans for a £30,000 statue of imperialist entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes in his home town of Bishops Stortford have divided local councillors, reports the East Anglian Daily Times (p7).

Conservative town and district councillor Ralph Gilbert is suggesting money is raised through public subscriptions for a permanent statue of the 19th Century founder of Rhodesia. He describes Rhodes as an incredible person, who has had a bad press.

But Liberal Democrat Mike Wood said Rhodes was a colonialist, imperialist and certainly a racist: 'I am certainly not in favour of a statue.'
