Following the royal assent of the Homelessness Bill in the house of lords yesterday, Chris Holmes, director of Shelter, which has campaigned for the Act for many years, said:
'Shelter is delighted that the Homelessness Bill has received royal assent, but it is now vital that this landmark piece of legislation is properly implemented to ensure it makes a difference to the lives of homeless people. The new Act puts a duty on all local authorities to publish strategies to tackle and prevent homelessness, it stresses the importance of different agencies and local authority departments working together and strengthens the duty to provide advice and assistance to non-priority homeless people.
'Shelter is determined that the Act realises its full potential and we have a range of activities planned to assist local authorities and others to make it work on the ground. We are determined to meet this bigger challenge and work as hard as we can to ensure this opportunity is maximised.'
