Scottish Conservatives this week met in Inverness after election results which hit a new low north of the border.

The party saw its share of the vote drop to 13.7%, almost half its 1992 general election showing.

Labour claimed substantial victories, but the overall winner was the Scottish National Party which saw its number of seats on Tayside RC, for example, double to 22.

l The Conservatives disappeared from Swansea City as all four members up for re-election lost their seats to Labour and the Liberal Democrats. Labour remained in control of all four councils which had elections in Wales: Newport, Rhondda and Port Talbot BCs and Swansea City.
