The results of the first national census of councillors will be published on 20 March at a conference in Leeds.

The conference, 'Democratic leadership and renewal - the challenge to councillors', is being organised by the Local Government Management Board. It will be attended by local government minister Hilary Armstrong.

The survey will give an overview of the socio-economic background of all UK councillors. It will include information on sex, ethnicity, education and profession as well as council position and length of service.

An LGMB spokesman said 95% of councils had responded and the return rate of 69% of councillors was far higher than anticipated.
