Ceredigion CC social services director Gethin Evans faces an uncertain future after being severely criticised in the Waterhouse report on child abuse.

Mr Evans was head of children's services at the former Gwynedd CC at a time when physical abuse was endemic in the county's children's homes.

The report says given problems like poor complaints procedures and a 'penny-pinching attitude to child care' it was only surprising the abuse was not worse.

It says: 'The blame for these misconceived arrangements rests squarely upon [former social services director] Lucille Hughes and, under her, upon Gethin Evans.'

Ceredigion MP Simon Thomas, who was Plaid Cymru social services spokesman at Ceredigion before his recent election, said Mr Evans should 'seriously consider his position'.

Mr Evans is absent on medical advice. The council said it would 'give particular consideration to the reference in the report to Mr Gethin Evans'.

Meanwhile, Wrexham CBC has suspended two employees who are named in the Waterhouse report.
