Environment Research Council (NERC).

Announcing this re-appointment Lord Sainsbury said: 'Under Rob's
dynamic leadership over the last three years NERC has
overhauled its strategic development processes, refocused the role of
its research centres and increased effective management through a new
executive board. He has also developed an excellent working
relationship with the chief executive, John Lawton.
'Rob's assured chairing of the council has contributed to the success
of the council's openness and transparency policy, and drawing on his
extensive industrial experience he has made a considerable
contribution to the council. I am pleased this is now set to
NERCis one of the UK's seven research councils. It has an annual
budget of £270m, which it uses to fund and carry out research in
environmental science. It is addressing some of the key questions
facing mankind such as global warming, renewable energy and
sustainable economic development.

recommendation was sought from the prime minister before the

4. Mr Rob Margetts, CBE, FREng, FIChemE, has been chairman of NERC
since 2001. He is Chairman of The BOC Group plc and chairman of Legal
& General Group Plc. He is also chairman (Europe) of Huntsman< p/="">Corporation (USA), a non-executive director of Anglo American Plc and
a governor and fellow of Imperial College of Science, Technology and
Medicine. He joined ICI in 1969 and joined the ICI Main Board in
1992. He was also chairman of the ICI Pension Fund Trustee Limited
from 1994-2000. He is a member of the Council for Science and
Technology (CST), the Council of the Chemical Industries Association
(CIA) and the Goodison Group. He is also chairman of the
government-industry forum on non-food uses of crops (DEFRA), trustee
and director of the Council for Industry and Higher Education (CIHE),
a director of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FST) and a
member of the Court of the University of Surrey.
