Barnsley MBC mayor Clive Cawthrow has resigned from the post for health reasons, reports The Times (p2).

Mr Cawthrow, 56, will appear before Barnsley magistrates next month charged with defrauding the DSS of £653.

Council leader Jeff Ennis said that Mr Cawthrow had been a dedicated mayor who had served the council with enthusiasm and good humour, The Times reports. A Labour councillor for 13 years and mayor since May, he will remain on the council.
