Charities such as Shelter and Edinburgh Women's Aid have accused the organisers of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting of attempting to cover up signs of poverty and squalor in Edinburgh to impress delegates at the conference which starts in the city on Friday.

The Herald (p5) reports that shops and businesses had been asked to remove posters and notices that might detract from the positive and prosperous image of the city.
