Keith Bland has been elected to take over as leader of Cheshire CC's Conservative group, reported the Daily Post (8 May, p13).

Mr Bland succeeds Simon Cussons, who decided not to stand again, and will continue to act as vice-chairman of the council and chairman of the social services committee until 22 May.

The Labour group gained control of the authority on 1 May but the county will return to no overall control once reorganisation has been implemented on 1 April 1998.

Mr Bland's term of office as county councillor will end as a result of the reorganisation, but he has been elected to sit on the new Warrington Council next year, the paper reports.
