Labour councillors on Cheshire CC have filed a complaint with the Standards Board for England against leader Paul Findlow over the recruitment of a new social services director.

Brendan Doyle (Lab) claims a remark made by Mr Findlow (Con) influenced social services executive member Lynn Hardwick (Con) to change her vote after interviewing two candidates for the job.

While Mr Doyle could not discuss the comment allegedly made by Mr Findlow, he said: 'In matters of personnel selection members are required to make decisions purely on the basis of merit - uninfluenced by any other consideration, including political.'

Ms Hardwick labelled the row 'unnecessary' and said she has approached the matter with 'sadness and concern'.

'I cannot agree with the opposition's interpretation of events,' Ms Hardwick said. Mr Findlow declined to comment beyond endorsing her comments.
