The Department of the Environment has backed a crackdown by Chichester DC which is forcing owners of listed buildings to replace plastic door and window frames with traditional materials, the Times reports (p20).

The paper says the council's move coincides with complaints to the the national heritage department by English heritage and other conservation groups that the character of conservation areas is being eroded by poor alterations.

Three householders have had notices served on them demanding that the reinstall wooden frames instead of PVC frames.
