The Education Secretary, John Patten, today announced the appointment of Mr Michael Collier as the Chief Executive-designate of the Funding Agency for Schools (FAS).

Mr Collier is currently Director of Finance of the Management Executive for the National Health Service in Scotland.

Mr Patten said: 'From 1 April 1994 the Funding Agency will be responsible for providing an efficient and effective service to all self-governing (grant-maintained) schools.

It will also have responsibilities for the provision of secondary school places in many areas of the country. It will therefore be very important in the development of the self-governing school sector. As I announced yesterday, 1,000 schools in England have already voted for self-governing status.

'Michael Collier has wide experience in the world of accountancy and in local government. I am very pleased to have secured his services for such an important post.'
