Responding to today's launch of the chief medical officer's annual report* on the state of public health, King's Fund chief executive Niall Dickson said:

'The chief medical officer has spoken - now it's time for ministers to listen. Sir Liam Donaldson's thoughtful and well argued report makes an unanswerable case for a ban on smoking in public places and workplaces. He effectively dismisses the suggestion that banning smoking would harm profits in the hospitality and leisure industries and this is to be welcomed.'
