Frank Maude, chief executive of the former Northavon DC and one of the longest-serving post holders, is retiring after 44 years in local government.

He had been with the council since its inception in 1974, and decided to take retirement when it was reorganised this year, becoming South Gloucestershire CC.

Mr Maude began his career in 1951 as a trainee with Manchester Corporation. He was part of the British contingent supervising the first democratic elections in Zimbabwe in 1980. Last year he was awarded an honorary masters degree by the University of the West of England for services to local government.
