Middlesbrough BC is expected to drop plans to ban child molesters from its housing estates, reports The Northern Echo (p7).

Councillor Michael J Carr, the council's housing chairman, who proposed the exclusion, said after a Labour group meeting last night: 'I am taken aback.'

The Northern Echo says Mr Carr refused to comment further, but said a council statement would be issued today.

Mr Carr had proposed that the council would be able to exclude child molesters using discretionary powers under the Housing Act 1996, which says that 'anti-social' people can be barred from social housing.
