Child death worries prompt ADSS action

The Association of Directors of Social Services is to carry out a national survey of area child protection committees to investigate how they respond to unexplained child deaths.

Child protection committees co-ordinate the agencies responsible for ensuring the safety of children at risk

The association said the survey would identify whether there were proposals for determining the cause of suspicious deaths more effectively.

The survey was prompted by concern that there is no standard procedure for dealing with cases where there is no hard evidence of a cause of death for a child.
