Hundreds of school children will be asked to give up part of their summer holidays for extra lessons in mathematics, reported The Mail on Sunday(p23).

About 50 schools will run summer numeracy classes for pupils moving from primary to secondary education in September. The pilot scheme, which will be announced by schools standards minister Stephen Byers this week, will give 11-year-olds 50 hours extra tuition.
