Hartlepool BC has spent £2m into converting a grade 2 listed building called Christ Church into an art gallery which opens today, reports the Guardian (p5).
The conversion is the latest element in an ambitious strategy for economic revival, started five years ago by the Teesside Development Corporation as part of the £160m Hartlepool Renaissance Project.
'Since the late 1970s the town has been suffering from a constant reduction of its economic base,' John Mennear, Hartlepool BC chief tourism officer told the paper.
'We're not saying these developments are some sort of panacea, but they are changing the appearance and perceptions of the town and that's attracting visitors.'
